Have you ever noticed that many friends, spouses, and siblings seem to be of similar size? It’s not your imagination. Having a friend, sibling or spouse that is obese could increase your chances of being obese.
Researchers at the Harvard Medical School and University of California studied more than 12,000 people over a 32-year period and found the risk of being obese was increased by 57% if a friend was obese, by 40% if a sibling was obese, and by 37% if a spouse was obese. Their findings were published in the July 26th edition of The New England Journal of Medicine.
