Bad Food Culprit: Tilapia Fish

With the explosion of research proclaiming that omega-3 fatty acids are healthy for your heart, people are consuming more fish than ever. But one popular entrée on many menus may actually do more harm than good. Researchers from Wake Forest University recently revealed the results of a major study that found farm-raised tilapia has more unhealthy fatty acids (omega-6) than certain hamburgers, doughnuts, and pork bacon. Tilapia, flounder, and swordfish have only modest amounts of the healthy, omega-3 fatty acids. Better choices for heart health are salmon or trout. Unfortunately, tilapia is the food that’s increased most in popularity in recent years. Hopefully, this new information will steer consumers to clearer waters!

hmmm....
I heard that somewhere. That's too bad because most people turn to tilapia for white fish. :o(
good things to know, we
good things to know, we always buy Tilapia, so i think we will cut them a lil bit..
thanks for the heads up, but
thanks for the heads up, but what about mackrel?
farm raised vs ocean caught
I have read a lot of articles saying to stay away from farm raised and only eat fish off of certain coasts (alaska, and pacific ocean) cleaner waters. So I try to pay attention to where my fish is from. Most restaurants not near the coast serve farm raised.

That stinkers. Oh well, back to salmon. Not that i ate much tilapia anyways, but we buy those big "crate" looking boxes from the store that have like 20 or 30 fillets in them

is it only "Farm Raised" to be concerned with?
Is it only farm-raised talapia? Is there such a thing as Wild talapia?
I have heard that farm raised anything isn't so great, and better to go with Wild caught, such as wild salmon as opposed to farm raised salmon.
Does anyone know if that's true for Talapia as well?
I have jumped on the bandwagon as far as incorporating Tilapia into my nutrition. I don't eat it all the time, but I do eat it more in the last month before a competition, probably 2-3 times a week. mainly b/c it's low fat, low sodium and high protein.
any more words of wisdom on this subject?
Melinda,
that is what I was thinking too...farm vs wild....
I have some thawed out to bake tonight.
I will look around and see, but I would think the farm raised are worse...but then, how do you know what is tame and what is wild......interesting!
(now, it will bother me till I find out! lol ....let me know if you find out before i do! )

I have only recently seen
I have only recently seen this kind of fish around. I usually buy salmon (mmm) if I want fish for dinner. Pyke and trout are also favorites here. Thanks for pointing this out. Now I know not to buy that kind.
wow
but if you are working out and limit the consumption you should be all right....
too much of anything is not good....moderation is the key
great info.....
