Beware of Sodium in Canned Soups!

Mona Liza Reyes's picture

Quick Tip: Half a can of many soups have about ½ the amount of sodium that you should consume in an entire day! Some of the soups with the highest amount of sodium per serving include Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom, French Onion, Chicken Noodle, Vegetable, and Cream of Chicken, Knorr French Onion Mix, and Progresso Minestrone and New England Clam Chowder. Better choices that have low amounts of sodium include Healthy Choice Soups, and Campbell’s Healthy Request line. When selecting soups, pick ones that have no more than 300 mg of sodium per one cup (8 oz) serving

Canned foods

It just seems to me that over the past few years, canned foods in general have become more dangerous. I personally don't use the soups, but I do enjoy the occational canned tuna &/or pink salmon. But even those, they say, contain minerals that can harm us. So I think we should just use everything in moderation & be aware. These days, i'm really considering switching to organic (everything) foods.

Thanks for the article Mona...

People these days don't know

People these days don't know how much bad stuff is in their food these days. It's amazing how much you can learn just by comparing different product labels. I try to keep a low sodium diet, I really can't handle anything high in sodium. I will start to sweat like I'm allergic to it, and I will feel all dehydrated for a few hours after. Even when I'm drinking a lot of water! It's hard to go out to eat, cause everyone likes to put salt in everything! I'll usually tell them to not put any seasoning on anything, cause they usually over do it.

Sodium bummed

Hey Mona how the heck are ya girl, howz my NorCal buddy? Its been such a long time. Great info about canned soups, I am always on the move and rushed to get the most healthy food I can and soups has been one of those lifetime love / hates. I have been reading the labels for years and the very low sodium soups I buy taste about as good as saw dust in water. I am still looking for that great mix of taste and health for a person on the go.

Looks like its homemade soups for now for me.

All the best Ms. Mona
